Metal Materials - Tin

Tin (Sn)

Tin is a silvery white, bright gray element found in group IV A of the periodic table. A soft, rollable metal, tin does not oxidize easily in air and has high corrosion resistance. Because it is easy to work and highly resistant to corrosion, it is used to plate other metals. Since tin is mechanically weak, it is used in alloys with elements such as copper, lead, zinc, iron, cadmium, antimony, nickel, cobalt, titanium and zirconium. Tin alloyed with lead is called solder. Tin plating gives copper pots and pans a bright surface while also protecting against copper’s toxic oxides. The tin content in bronze, meanwhile, prevents corrosion (rusting) and improves copper’s mechanical properties.
